What Does SVG Optimization Do?
SVG files exported from design tools like Figma, Illustrator, or Inkscape often contain significant bloat: editor metadata, unused definitions, redundant group wrappers, and verbose attribute formats. Optimization strips this out while preserving the visual output.
Common optimizations applied:
- Removing XML declarations and editor-specific metadata (e.g.,
<sodipodi:...>). - Collapsing redundant
<g>wrapper elements. - Stripping empty attributes and default values.
- Removing developer comments and whitespace.
- Shortening numeric precision in path coordinates.
Why Optimize SVGs?
- Faster page loads — smaller file sizes mean less data for browsers to download and parse.
- Cleaner code — optimized SVGs are easier to read and hand-edit if needed.
- Better performance — fewer DOM nodes in inline SVGs speed up browser rendering.
- Reduced storage — important when serving many icons or illustrations from a CDN.
